Messines

The parish of S. Bartolomeu de Messines extends out to a vast area of some 250 kms2. This parish, within the municipality of Silves is the biggest in the Algarve. The town of S. Bartolomeu de Messines with approximately 500 habitants is graphically located between main Algarve routes and access to the rest of the country including the A2 and the IP1. It is situated approximately 17kms west of the town of Silves.

S. Bartolomeu de Messines is home to various archaeological findings, explaining an in depth history of various settlers such as the Greeks, Romans and Arabs.

Archaeological findings of the area are mainly from the bronze age, proving evidence of the region’s rich minerals and industries which still function in the area today including ceramic and textiles, natural cork and dried fruits.

S. Bartolomeu de Messines is still an non-commercialised town, preserving its history through local sold products and services. The local history and industry in addition to its connection to the historical town of Silves attracts visitors from all over the world.
